Standard Mould Units
A Mould unit may be defined as an assembly of parts, which conforms to an accepted structural shape & size. The Mould unit is purchased with the Mould plates suitably attached together and a guidance system incorporated. Naturally the Mould unit does not contain the impression form and this aspect of Mould manufacture must be left to a specialist Mould-maker. Mould unit manufacturers adopt the two-part mold as the ‘standard Mould unit’ because this particular Mould construction is the most widely used design in industrial practice. The unit comprises two Mould plates (a cavity plate and a core plate) plus an ejector system.
Advantages of using Standard Mould Units:
- Drawing sheets for individual unit sizes are available. This reduces drawing time.
- Less steel needs to be carried in stock, therefore investment is reduced.
- Buying and stock control are simplified.
- The cost of the Mould unit is known therefore estimating is easier.
- Waiting time for steel blanks, etc., is avoided.
- Shaping, planning and drilling of steel plates and blocks is avoided.
- Turning, grinding and fitting of guide pillars and bushes is similarly avoided.
- The ejector plate is pre-positioned and located.
- The individual Mould plates are screwed and dowel together.
- Machine time is saved as a result of 6 and 7 above.
- Labour time is saved as a result of 6-9 above.
- Work on the impression can usually begin immediately.
- The overall time the mould is in the tool room is reduced.
- Mould delivery time is reduced.
- In small mounding companies, one moulid unit can be used for several similar jobs. Only the impression inserts need to be changed.
